Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about DoorBird video intercoms — installation, access control, cloud recording, smart home integrations, and troubleshooting.

Setup & Installation

Getting your DoorBird up and running

DoorBird requires the latest available iOS or Android operating system. New app features are reserved for current smartphone hardware. Download the free DoorBird app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Always update to the latest app version — the vast majority of reported issues are resolved simply by updating.
After mounting and connecting power via PoE (802.3af) or 12–24V AC/DC:
  1. Download the free DoorBird app (iOS or Android).
  2. Tap Add Device and scan the QR code on the back of your device.
  3. Connect to your WiFi network or use direct Ethernet.
  4. Configure users, access codes, and notification preferences in Administration.
Full video installation guides are at doorbird.com/en/manuals.
No. Powerline, HomePlug, and Devolo adapters are not suitable for DoorBird door communication — they do not reliably transfer all data packets required for audio/video calls. Use a direct Ethernet (PoE) connection or WiFi only. This is the most common cause of audio dropouts and connection instability.
Yes. DoorBird operates fully on a local network (LAN) without internet. You can make calls between the door station and SIP-compatible phones or in-home devices. Internet connectivity is required only for remote access via the app when away from home and for cloud recording/storage features.

Access Control

RFID, keypads, fingerprints, and keyfobs

The A1121 has a built-in RFID reader configurable for either 125 kHz or 13.56 MHz — parallel operation of both is not possible. Frequency is switched via the DoorBird app. Up to 500 key fobs can be registered.
The D21x series features a built-in 125 kHz RFID reader (Active Reader Passive Tag, ISO/IEC 18000-2:2009). Up to 500 key fobs can be registered and managed through the app's Administration menu.
No. The D11x series does not include an RFID reader. Access control options for this series are: keypad PIN (KV models — up to 6 PINs) and Fingerprint 50 biometric reader (FV models — up to 50 fingerprints). The RFID-capable D21x or A1121/A1122 models are the right choice if you need key fob access.
The Fingerprint 50 reader, found on D1101FV, D1102FV, and A1122 models, stores up to 50 individual fingerprints. Fingerprints are enrolled and managed via the DoorBird app. Multiple fingers per person can be registered to improve recognition reliability.
These models include a 433 MHz transceiver originally intended for sensors and remote controls (e.g., garage doors). Due to insufficient market demand and lack of third-party partner support, this module currently remains inactive.

Motion & Notifications

Configuring motion detection and push alerts

Go to: DoorBird App → Settings → Administration → Login → Motion Sensor → Settings. Enable the motion sensor and set your detection schedule and sensitivity. Only devices with a built-in motion sensor support this feature.
First enable the motion sensor (see above). Then enable motion push notifications via: DoorBird App → Settings → tap your device → Push Notifications → Motion. Both the motion sensor schedule and push notification schedule must be active and overlapping for alerts to fire.
Enable cloud motion recording separately: DoorBird App → Settings → Administration → Login → Cloud Recording → Motion Sensor → Settings. The active user must also have permission to view motion events in their user settings.

Cloud & Storage

Recording options and local storage

Every DoorBird IP video door station includes free integrated image history: the 50 most recent visitor events at VGA quality, permanently stored in the cloud and downloadable via the app. This is free and will remain free — no subscription required, ever.
Cloud Recording Pro ($135.40/year) upgrades to: unlimited HD video (720p) for doorbell rings and motion events, 7-day rolling cloud storage, live cloud HD video access, and video search/download. Requires 0.5 Mbps upload per station. Compatible with D11x and D18x series.
Yes. DoorBird supports RTSP streaming and FTP push to compatible NAS and NVR systems, including Synology, QNAP, Hikvision, Milestone, and others. Local recording via NAS/NVR eliminates any cloud dependency and provides unlimited local storage. See doorbird.com/en/compatible for the full integration list.

Smart Home & Integrations

Connecting DoorBird to your smart home

DoorBird integrates with 50+ smart home and professional automation platforms including Control4, Crestron, Home Assistant, Loxone, KNX, IFTTT, Homey, Fibaro, and more. Smart lock integrations include Yale, August, Kwikset, and NUKI. NAS/NVR integrations include Synology and QNAP. Full list: doorbird.com/en/compatible.
DoorBird does not natively integrate with Apple HomeKit directly. It can be bridged into HomeKit via Home Assistant with the HomeKit Bridge add-on or Homebridge. The DoorBird app itself runs on iOS and supports Siri Shortcuts for door unlock automation.
Yes. DoorBird provides a comprehensive open LAN API (HTTP) and Cloud API for third-party integrations. The API enables: doorbell ring events, live video streaming, door unlock commands, relay control, motion events, and more. Full documentation: doorbird.com/en/api.

Troubleshooting

Common issues and how to fix them

In 99% of cases, the pre-configured app user (e.g., abcdef0001) has been changed or removed. Check: DoorBird App → Settings → Administration → Login → Users → Settings. Verify the user exists and the password is correct. Create a new user or reset the password, then retry adding the device.
Audio problems are most commonly caused by: (1) Using Powerline/HomePlug network adapters — switch to direct Ethernet or WiFi; (2) Outdated DoorBird app — update immediately; (3) Weak WiFi signal at the door unit — a wired PoE connection provides the most stable audio.
